I first discovered this French version of one of my favorite Cole Porter songs in the piano bar of a cruise ship. I asked the pianist if he would make me a copy. He did so, and asked me to come back the next night and sing it. I had taken four classes in French (three years in high school and an intensive summer course in college), so I learned it well enough to sing it while reading it over the pianist's shoulder (with a little fumbling). My husband recorded my singing this song at an audition for the chorus of an Italian opera. I wish I could have done a perfect audition, but I found the French harder to memorize than I thought I would have when I came back to the music two years after that cruise. Still, it was a reasonably good audition for a musical director who was already familiar with my work, and I got in. It was my first audition in one-and-a-half years, and by the time the show goes up, it will be my first stage production in three years. By the way, for those who know French, I knew it was "je n'y puis echapper," but nerves got the best of me and I sang "je n'y suis echapper." At least I got the liaison right!
